It doesn’t take long to reach the southern tip of Lake Como from the center of the sprawling metropolis of Milan, less than an hour in fact. This close proximity of these once glacial waters to large sections of landlocked Italians can go some way to explaining the allure of Lago di Como. Yet, upon arrival to the lake’s serene shores, one immediately understands the enticing nature of this enchanting area.
Shaped like an inverted letter ‘Y’, the lake itself is hemmed in by countless mountains jutting into the skyline. We are, after all, at the foot of the Alps. As the sides of these mountains run towards the lake’s sparkling waters, and rocky tops become verdant hillsides, signs of life and affluence appear in abundance.
Lake Como is known for its opulent villas and prestigious inhabitants, but also for its cultural, artistic, and scenic wonders. As a part of our Three Lakes Tour, we dove headfirst into the very best of what the lake has to offer.
Touring the Towns of Lake Como
Our first stop naturally occurred in Como itself. At the base of the lake’s western section, Como has established itself as a tourist hotspot and as a result is brimming with highly maintained cultural heritage sites.
Our walking tour of the city, filled with a stunning collection of churches, piazzas, gardens, and theatres, was followed by a trip to see “the most beautiful villa of Lake Como.” Elegant and romantic, Villa Balbianello has long attracted distinguished travelers, including the directors of Star Wars and James Bond.
Our journey then snaked north via the winding path that the water has forged, bypassing the postcard-worthy Cernobbio, until we reached Menaggio. The town belongs to a trio of the lake’s central towns, all known for their iconic beauty and within a short ferry ride of one another. Menaggio itself is picturesque and captivating, primed for an early morning passeggiata.
Bellagio and Varenna comprise the remainder of Lake Como’s golden triangle. The narrow winding lanes and old fishermen’s houses of Varenna are juxtaposed against Bellagio’s illustrious appeal, providing each with a unique, yet equally inviting charm.
